BEND, OREGON, March 27, 2020 – The United States has jumped ahead of all other countries in the number of new COVID-19 cases reported each day (see accompanying graph).

On March 27 the U. S. reported 16,797 new cases (data for the previous day), compared to China with 111 new cases on March 27 and Italy with 6,153 new cases.  China and Italy led the U. S. in daily new cases until March 23, when the U. S. passed China.

U . S. takes lead in new viruses cases

Strict control measures such as stay-at-home orders and social distancing began on January 23 in China, on March 11 in Italy, and around March 16 in the U. S.

Using as a starting day of the outbreak, the first day that 300 daily new cases were exceeded in each country, the control measures appear to have caused the number of daily new cases to peak at 7,744 new cases on day 13 in China and day 21 in Italy (although Italy’s numbers have since resumed rising). The U. S. appears to have not yet peaked as of day 16 (March 27) of the U. S. outbreak.
